Responsibilities
The Public Works Department provides engineering and construction services for the City of Auburn. The individuals who devote their professional time and energy to Public Works are committed to making the Auburn community a better, safer and more comfortable place to live. It is a fundamental goal of the Public Works Department of the City of Auburn to provide citizens with a better quality of life through Public Works.
Public Works is represented by
five divisions
: Construction and Maintenance, Engineering, Inspections, Administration, and Traffic Engineering.
Recent Major Roadway Improvements
Statistics
FY 2010
The Construction & Maintenance Division constructed or repaired 1,484 feet of sidewalk last year.
The Traffic Engineering Division replaced, repaired, or reset more than 200 street signs during the year.
The Engineering Inspection Division inspected 260 storm water retention facilities and rated 273.4 miles of City streets this year.
The Engineering Design Division’s Survey Crew collected and entered into GPS 485 storm water inlets over the past five months.
The Public Works Department recently completed a number of roadway projects to improve the traffic flow in Auburn:
A left turn lane, an additional thru lane, and a right turn lane were added at the intersection of Shelton Mill Road and East University Drive. A dedicated turn lane was added at Dekalb Street, a right turn lane added at Dean Road, and a right turn lane was added at Stoker Avenue.
The timing of traffic signals at intersections around the mall corridor was coordinated to improve traffic flow. At the intersection of East University Drive and Opelika Road, the signal was changed to allow motorists to turn left on green whenever traffic conditions permit.
A left turn signal was added to all four approaches at the intersection of East University Drive and South Donahue Drive.
Traffic signals were added at the intersections of North College Street and Shelton Mill Road and at East Glenn Avenue and Airport Road.
A project to add illuminated street signs to several downtown intersections is underway. Citizens should begin seeing the new signs this spring.
