D.A.R.E stands for Drug Abuse
Resistance Education. Sgt. Clemon Byrd and Officer Keith Horne head
our D.A.R.E. program. The D.A.R.E. program targets children before they
are likely to have been led by their peers to experiment with tobacco,
drugs, and alco hol. By reaching children at an age when they are most
receptive to drug prevention education, Project D.A.R.E. seeks to
prevent adolescent drug use and to reduce drug trafficking by
eliminating the demand for drugs. The objectives of D.A.R.E. program are
to equip elementary and junior high students with the skills for
recognizing and resisting social pressures to experiment with alcohol,
tobacco, and drugs; to help students develop self-esteem; to teach
positive alternatives to substance abuse; to develop students' skills in
risk assessment and decision making; and to build students'
interpersonal and communications skills. Auburn began the D.A.R.E.
program in 1989. We started with the 5th grades at J.F. Drake Middle
School. The program was then given to the 6th grades during the same
year. We piloted the elementary school program during the 1991 school
year at Dean Road School. In addition, we added the Junior High School
program for the 7th grades at Auburn Junior High School. I n 1993 all
schools within the City of Auburn school system except Auburn High
School had implemented to D.A.R.E. program. To obtain more information,
contact Sgt. Clemon Byrd at (334) 501-3125.
Crime prevention is the anticipation,
recognition and appraisal of a crime risk and the initiation of an
action to remove or reduce it. The Auburn Police Department offers

to answer any questions and may be contacted by calling (334) 501-3125.
This consists of organizing
neighborhoods into groups for the purpose of helping each other and the
Police Department. It does not take a lot of time to organize but it
does take participation of the citizen's part in order to be effective.
At "watch " meetings, topics such as areas of security and the
weaknesses and strengths of certain areas are discussed. Information on
what is needed to make homes more secure and how homeowners can do this
at a small cost is also discussed.
Citizens are encouraged to let the
Police Department know when they are leaving town. An officer will check
your house throughout a shift to ensure it's safety. To arrange a house
check, contact the Patrol Division (link) at (334) 501-3150.
Sgt. Byrd is available on any day or time to conduct a home security survey. He will walk through your home with you and make suggestions about weak security areas. He will fill out a survey sheet as he goes and leave a copy with you in order to assist you in making your home more resistant to a possible break in. Property inventory sheets are available for the homeowners and a copy may be kept on file at the Police Department. The Crime prevention unit loans engravers and assists in marking property.
