^top of page*Don't Forget - Track and Field Scores are DUE this Friday!

Athletes are allowed to participate in two track and field events OR two track and field events plus one relay event.  Teachers and Coaches:  Please use the Track and Field Forms to submit your scores; the forms can be downloaded here.  All forms should be mailed to Lee County Special Olympics, Attention: Alison Hall, 307 South Dean Road, Auburn, AL, 36830, faxed to 334-501-2960, or dropped off at Dean Road Recreation Center in Auburn.  Also, remember to submit t-shirt sizes for all of your athletes if you have not already done so.  Scores are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 28th.

Important Sports Rules and Information for Track and Field:
Teachers and Coaches:  Please use the Track and Field Form to submit your times/distances.

Please remember the following rules when participating in Track and Field events:

  • If an athlete runs the 50M Dash faster than 12 seconds, then he/she must compete in a different event, i.e. 100M Dash, 200M Dash, etc…
  • If an athlete jumps a distance further than 1.25M (5 ft.), he/she cannot compete in the Standing Long Jump and must compete in a different event, i.e. running long jump, etc…
  • If an athlete throws the softball further than 25M (82 ft.), he/she cannot compete in the Softball Throw and must compete in a different event, i.e. shotput, etc…
  • If an athlete throws the tennis ball further than 6.5M (21 ft.), he/she cannot compete in the Tennis Ball Throw and must compete in a different event, i.e. softball throw, shotput, etc…
  • Athletes must provide their own assisted devices. Assisted devices may consist of canes, crutches or walker.
  • Athletes can participate in 2 events plus a relay event. A relay team can consist of 4 Special Olympics Athletes OR 2 Special Olympics athletes and 2 athletes without intellectual disabilities, also known as Special Olympics Unified Sports partners.   • Shot Put Ages/Weights:
    • Men 8-11 yrs: 2.72 kg/6 lbs.
    • Men 12 & up: 4 kg/8.13 lbs.
    • Women 8-11 yrs: 1.81 kg/4 lbs.
    • Women 12 & up: 2.72 kg/ 6 lbs.
  • Wheelchair Shot Put Ages/Weights:
    • Men: 1.81 kg/4 lbs.
    • Women: 1.81 kg/4 lbs.

^top of page*All T-Shirt Orders are Past Due:

T-Shirt order forms were due on Friday, February 15th at 5 p.m.  We cannot guarantee t-shirts at this point; however, we will still take orders up until Friday, March 28th in case we can order additional shirts.  So, if your classroom missed out, or you want a t-shirt for your parent or siblings, let us know before FRIDAY!  If you need a t-shirt form, please contact Amanda or Erica at 334-501-2930.  Remember – Each athlete, teacher and coach participating will receive a FREE T-shirt.  (Please limit 2 Teacher T-Shirts per class.)  Parents, friends and supporters can purchase a t-shirt for $10.00 each.

^top of page*Lee County Special Olympics Gymnastics Meet this Friday:

Don’t miss out on the chance to watch our local Special Olympic gymnasts compete in their first-ever regional meet on Friday, March 28th.  Opening Ceremonies start at 10 a.m. and the competition will start at 10:15 a.m.  The meet will be held at Premier Athletics, which is located at 923-B Stage Road, Auburn, AL.  Stop by and cheer on our local athletes to victory!
 

^top of page*Nominate Your Athlete or Coach!:

We would like to recognize our outstanding coaches and athletes from the Lee County area.  The criteria for Outstanding Coach and Outstanding Athlete are listed below:

Outstanding Coach:

For the special educator, physical educator, coach or volunteer who, as a Special Olympics coach in any official Special Olympics sport (who trains and works with Special Olympics athletes on a regular basis), best demonstrates the high degree of technical skill and commitment needed to motivate and train athletes.

•           Technical knowledge of sports skills and teaching methods

•           Commitment to offering training

•           Leadership ability in group setting

•           Involvement with athletes in Local, Area and Program level competitions

•           Involvement with family members

•           Indications that coach has been an advocate of Special Olympics Alabama

•           Participation in Training Schools

Outstanding Athlete of the Year:

For the Special Olympics Athlete, who epitomizes the spirit of a true winner by his or her willingness to help others and give his or her very best while displaying outstanding courage and sportsmanship (both on and off the field) of athletic competition.

            •           Participation in a training club program

            •           Participation at Local, Area, Program or International games

            •           Demonstrates extra effort to overcome difficult obstacles

            •           Demonstrates leadership ability by serving as an assistant coach, volunteering on a committee, etc.

            •           Demonstrates a mature attitude toward responsibility

Please keep the above criteria in mind when submitting all nominations.  Nomination forms can be downloaded here or can be picked up at Dean Road Recreation Center in Auburn.  Please submit all nominations by Friday, April 4, 2008.

 

^top of page*Congratulations to all of our Bowling Athletes!:

The Lee County Bowling Tournament was held on Friday, March 14th at the Auburn Lanes.  65 athletes from all over the county competed for the 1st Place Ribbon.  Fun was had by all and we send a special thank you to our friends in the Auburn Civitan Club for providing refreshments throughout the tournament and donating 3 ramps for our ramp assisted bowlers!  For tournament results click here; for photos, please visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2542515599.
