Facilities - Cemeteries

The City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department oversees and maintains four municipal cemeteries.  These are:

Memorial Park Cemetery 1000 E. Samford Avenue
Pine Hill Cemetery 303 Armstrong Street
Westview Cemetery 700 Westview Drive
Town Creek Cemetery 950 S. Gay Street

The City of Auburn is also responsible for the grounds maintenance of Baptist Hill Cemetery, located on Dean Road at the intersection of S Dean Rd & E Thach Ave.  Please refer to the Parks & Recreation Guide or the links above for a map.

All four cemeteries contain significant historical value. Detailed history can be found in the Auburn Cemetery Trust Brochure. While we encourage the general public to visit and enjoy the serene beauty and peacefulness of our cemeteries, we ask that you visit these facilities during normal hours of operation; sunup to sundown.

(-) LOT PURCHASES (Back to Top)

  • All lots will be sold subject to Perpetual Care and all work will be done under the direction of the Superintendent of Cemeteries.

  • All grading, landscape work, and improvements of any kind will be done under the direction of the City of Auburn.

  • No enclosure of any kind, such as a fence, coping, hedge or ditch will be permitted around any lot or grave at Memorial Park or Westview Cemeteries, unless pre-approved by the Cemetery Advisory Board.

  • All trees, shrubs, and herbage of any kind will be planted, trimmed, cut or removed under the direction of the City of Auburn.

  • Settees, urns, boxes, shells, toys, and other similar articles will not be permitted to be placed or maintained on any lot or grave in said cemeteries.

  • The City of Auburn allows only those benches that have been approved by the Cemetery Advisory Board and purchased through Parks and Recreation to be placed at any municipal cemetery.

  • The City of Auburn will replace the existing grass back on the lot.  The lot owner is responsible for watering and any grass replacements.

  • Lot markers displaying the number of lots will be furnished without a charge to the lot owner by the City of Auburn.

(-) INTERMENT SERVICES (Back to Top)

  • All interments, disinterments and removals will be made by the City of Auburn’s employees under the supervision of the Superintendent of Cemeteries with the City of Auburn’s approval.  Any interments, disinterments, and removals are at the request of the lot owner or his/her personal representative and at the lot owner’s expense.  The charges for interments, disinterments, and removals are fixed rates assigned by the City of Auburn.

  • Grave mounds will not be allowed and no lot will be raised above the established grade.

  • The City of Auburn does not provide cemetery tents or chairs.  Tents and chairs are provided by the funeral home.

  • A vault is required by state regulations.

  • Two cremation burials are allowed in one space.  A cremation burial is handled the same as a regular interment.

  • Two infants (less than six months in age) may be buried in one space either in separate caskets or both in the same casket.

  • One week after the grave has been closed, the Cemetery Crew will remove the flowers from the prepared site, level the dirt on the grave and replace the grass that was removed.

  • Information on burial spaces, markers, and preparation fees may be obtained by contacting the Parks and Recreation Administrative offices.

(-) CEMETERY MARKERS (Back to Top)

  • All graves must be marked and only one marker will be permitted on a grave.  The only exception to this policy will be if a grave is designated for a cremation burial by the Superintendent of Cemeteries; in that case two markers will be permitted.

  • All markers must be of bronze.  Marble and granite markers are not allowed in any municipal cemetery with the exception of Pine Hill.

  • Markers must not exceed 24" x 18-1/4" including a vase, nor be less than 6" by 6".

  • The standard sizes of grave markers ordered by the City of Auburn are 24" x 14" and 24" x 12".

  • The standard sizes of corner markers are 4" x 4".

  • No double markers will be permitted.

  • All markers and corner markers will be set flush with and follow the contour of the established grade.

  • Markers will be set on a concrete foundation extending into the ground 4 inches or more.  Markers may be set into a foundation of granite or marble, but cannot exceed a two-inch border around the bronze.  If a marker and a separate vase unit are installed in a granite or marble base, it cannot exceed 30" x 20".

  • If any marker, effigy, structure, improvement, inscription, or other object is placed in or upon any lot which may be determined by the City of Auburn to be offensive or injurious to the appearance of the surrounding lots or grounds, the Superintendent of Cemeteries has the right to enter upon such lot and remove any and all offensive objects.

  • All cemetery markers at Memorial Park or Westview will be installed by the City of Auburn Superintendent of Cemeteries.  All cemetery markers at Pine Hill Cemetery will be installed under the direction and supervision of the Superintendent of Cemeteries at the expense of the lot owner.

  • The foundation of all markers will be installed by the City of Auburn’s Superintendent of Cemeteries at the expense of the lot owner, the charge for which will be fixed by the City of Auburn Cemetery Advisory Board.

  • It is optional for a citizen to buy a marker from the City of Auburn.  If a citizen purchases a marker elsewhere, it must meet the City’s specifications.  The City of Auburn will offer markers for sale to interested parties for installation in the City of Auburn’s municipal cemeteries.

  • There is a fee for all marker installations; therefore, the City of Auburn must be notified if the lot owner purchases a marker from a company other than us.

  • Prices for markers will vary according to size, type, and whether they are with or without a vase unit.

  • A marker order and installation fee must be paid in full before the marker will be placed at a grave site.

(-) BENCH PURCHASES (Back to Top)

  • On July 12, 1994, two types of benches were approved by the Cemetery Advisory Board.  These are the only benches that are allowed for installation in all Auburn municipal cemeteries.

  • Bench markers can only be purchased from the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Administrative office.

  • Placement of said benches must be coordinated with the Superintendent of Cemeteries.

Please direct questions regarding lots and burials to the Superintendent of Cemeteries.  For general information regarding marker or bench purchases, please contact the Administrative Secretary.  Both parties may be reached at the Administrative offices of the City of Auburn Parks and Recreation Department.

The City of Auburn reserves the right to change the foregoing conditions and restrictions at any time and from time to time, as the members of the governing body of the City of Auburn and their successors in office, may in their sole discretion determine.
