Athletics - Tennis

Jerry Schwarzauer returns a serve in the Alabama Adult Hardcourt Designated tennis tournament held August 4-6 at the Samford Tennis Center in Auburn.  Jerry and his partner John Folta finished second in the men's 30 and over doubles.  Other winners were James Nylen in the men's open singles and James and Peter Nylen in the men's open doubles.

Tots Tennis & Fitness (2-3 years old)
A class for preschoolers with an adult.  This class will be taught on a tennis court, but will focus on developing motor skills transferable to many sports.  Games and activities using different size balls and other teaching aids will help the students develop hand-eye coordination and build confidence.

Munchkins Tennis (4-5 years old)
An activity designed to introduce young children to tennis through games and instruction.  A junior size tennis racquet or racquetball racquet will be sufficient for this class.  Register for one, two, or four days per week.

Half Volleys Tennis (6-8 years old)
Class activities will focus on fun and enjoyment while developing tennis skills for children.  Junior size racquets are ideal for this class.  Register for one, two, or four days per week.

Future Stars Tennis (9-12 years old)
A class designed for beginners and intermediates.  Developing basic tennis skills will be the objective, while fun, fair play, and proper court etiquette will be stressed.  Adult size or large junior racquets will be suitable for this class.  Instructors reserve the right to move participants to "players" class if ability is above this class level.

Players Tennis (13-18 years old)
A class designed for advanced players.  Instruction will be mixed with match play and practice drills.  Developing basic tennis skills will be the objective, while fun, fair play, and proper court etiquette will be stressed.  Instructors reserve the right to move participants to "Future Stars" class if ability is below this class level.

Drills, Skills, & Thrills for Beginners (19 years and older)
A class for women looking for exercise and wanting to learn a lifetime sport.  Class objectives will be learning basic tennis skills and court positioning.  Tips on singles and doubles strategies will be taught, as well as proper court etiquette.

If you enjoy tennis, but would like a more competitive and challenging practice, this is the class for you.  In addition to strategy and instruction, emphasis will be placed on drills in order to improve shot making and consistency.

Drive Time Tennis (19 years and older)
A class for the working adult. A great way to exercise, meet people, and learn a lifetime sport. Participants need no previous tennis experience to be successful and enjoy this class. Basic tennis skills will be taught, as well as the scoring system and tips on singles and doubles.

USTA Adult Men's Doubles (19 years and older)
Adults can compete on a local team that may progress from Local to State to Sectional to National Championship play.   This league is for levels 3.0-4.0.  The team match consists of five individual matches - two singles positions and three doubles positions.

Women's Doubles League (19 years and older)
This is a fun program for women tennis players from beginner up to 3.0.  Interested players can sign up by themselves or with a partner.  Players will meet people with similar abilities and experience levels to maker play more exciting.

USTA Adult/Senior Combo Doubles League (19 years and older)
A more competitive doubles league with teams of 6-14 players.  Teams will be formed according to ability levels and will be created in early June.  Abilities will consist of 6.5-9.5.  All league champion teams are eligible for state championships in September.  Interested players may sign up on their own, with a partner or team.

USA Junior Team Tennis (7-15 years old)
A recreational tennis league for children.  Players do not need prior tennis experience, but this is geared more towards players with experience.  The players will practice once a week and play matches once a week.  Tuesday and Thursday are practice days, and matches are played on Fridays.
