Facilities - Nunn-Winston House

The Nunn-Winston House is one of Auburn's finest examples of antebellum Greek Revival architecture dating from the 1850's.  Once the residence of the Nunn and Winston families, the house was moved in 1996 from its original location on South Gay Street to Kiesel Park at 520 Chadwick Lane.  Samuel Nunn and his family moved from their settlement in Tuskegee, Alabama into the house located on South Gay Street (at that time the center of town), after a siege with hostile Indians.  Samuel Nunn was among the first settlers of Auburn and one of the early trustees of Auburn Male College.  This charming residence was once considered a social center for many citizens, who visited the Nunns' to enjoy delightful evenings of dancing and fellowship.  In 1887 Mary Hurt, daughter of Samuel Nunn, sold the house to Thomas Harris Winston, a wounded Civil War Veteran, and his wife Sarah Cathleen Shealy Winston who moved into town from Cusseta, Alabama.  After Thomas' death in 1903 the home was left to Sarah, who took in University students as boarders until her death in 1927.  Sarah left this one-story majestic home to her unmarried daughter, Neva Winston who continued to board University students.  The house remained in the Winston family until the 1980's and was included in the Historic Sites Inventory of Lee County in 1981.

The house and activities center are available for tours, receptions, luncheons, garden parties, weddings, reunions, dinners, and meetings.
