JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for performing technical, supervisory, and training duties in the protection of lives and property endangered by fire and other emergency situations. 

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

o   Responds to fires and performs fire suppression activities utilizing firefighting equipment and techniques, including nozzle and aerial ladder operation, fire stream direction, and building ventilation.

 

o   Supervises personnel in emergency and non-emergency situations in the absence of Lieutenants.

 

o   Administers first response emergency medical care.

 

o   Extricates and rescues victims as needed.

 

o   Inspects assigned apparatus and equipment; performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on same.

 

o   Responds to hazardous materials calls.

 

o   Participates and assists in training sessions.

 

o   Inspects buildings; prepares pre-fire plans.

 

o   Drives fire apparatus to and from fire scenes.

 

o   Performs housekeeping and grounds maintenance duties.

 

o   Conducts fire hydrant inspections.

 

o   Conducts fire and public safety education programs.

o   Conducts station tours.

 

o   Conducts and assists with fire drills.

 

o   Assists in completing reports; enters data to computer.

 

o   Assists in the training of student firefighters.

 

o   Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

 

o   Knowledge of firefighting and rescue techniques.

 

o   Knowledge of firefighting apparatus and equipment.

 

o   Knowledge of hydraulics.

 

o   Knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes.

 

o   Knowledge of division and city rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

 

o   Knowledge of local geography, streets, and buildings.

 

o   Knowledge of potential fire hazards.

 

o   Knowledge of hazardous materials.

 

o   Knowledge of first responder emergency medical care.

 

o   Knowledge of building construction and basic mechanics.

 

o   Skill in the operation and use of fire equipment and apparatus.

 

o   Skill in driving in emergency situations.

 

o   Skill in using a personal computer.

 

o   Skill in oral and written communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Lieutenant assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor reviews work in progress and upon completion for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include relevant federal and state laws, local ordinances, building codes, supervisory instructions, and division rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related fire suppression duties.  The variety of emergency situations encountered at fire, rescue, and emergency medical scenes contributes to the complexity of the work.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to protect lives and property by suppressing fires and responding to other emergency situations.  Successful performance results in increased public safety and decreased property loss.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, fire and emergency victims, other emergency personnel, and the general public.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  At fire scenes, the employee lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools and equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed in a station house, except while at fire or other emergency scenes.  At a fire scene the employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and hazardous situations.  The work requires the use of protective clothing and devices.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

o   Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

 

o   Possession of firefighter I certification from Alabama State Standards Commission.

     or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year of hire.

 

o   Ability to complete EMT basic course and receive a state license within one (1) year of hire.

 

o   Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 

o   Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.
