JOB TITLE: Service Technician ES/19

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for servicing and assisting in repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles.
MAJOR DUTIES:
o Assists in performing engine, exhaust, electrical, brake, and transmission repairs on assigned vehicles.
o Conducts scheduled preventive maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
o Repairs flat tires, replaces worn tires, and balances new tires for all unified government vehicles.
o Performs repair work on lawn mowers, air compressors, and other small engines.
o Maintains work area.
o Completes and signs work orders according to service rendered.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
o Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
o Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
o Skill in performing basic vehicle repairs.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Division Manager – Fleet Services assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include supervisory instructions, preventive maintenance worksheets, and the operating, maintenance, and parts manuals for each vehicle. These guidelines are clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work of this position consists of related duties in automotive service, maintenance, and repair. The variety of vehicles and equipment serviced contribute to the complexity of the work.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this assignment is to assist in servicing, maintaining, and repairing City government vehicles. The effect of this work is to maintain safe and effective City government vehicles.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, employees who bring vehicles in to be repaired, and auto supply vendors.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give and exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands typically include standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, the frequent lifting of light and heavy objects, the climbing of ladders, the use of tools requiring a high degree of manual dexterity, and the ability to distinguish between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is typically performed in a shop, which exposes the employee to noise, dirt, dust, grease, irritating chemicals, and machinery with moving parts. The work must occasionally be performed outdoors, which exposes the employee to inclement weather. The work may require protective devices such as masks and full body suits.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
o Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
o Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
o Possession of or the ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
