JOB TITLE:  Collector – Recycling                                                                                           ES/16

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for driving a rear-­loading refuse truck, a specialized recycling vehicle, or a combination vehicle along a predetermined residential route to collect recyclable materials.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

o   Drives a rear‑loading refuse truck, compartmentalized recycling vehicle, or tows a trailer along a predetermined route to collect and haul recyclable materials and to collect and dispose of trash.

 

o   Transports recycling to recycling processing area; unloads recycling and resumes route.

 

o   Transports trash to processing area; unloads trash and resumes route.

 

o   Performs routine maintenance on truck (i.e., greasing, checking air pressure, oil and other fluids) and informs appropriate personnel of necessary major repairs.

 

o   Maintains daily route records, including records of blocked dumpsters, pickups per day, etc.

 

o   Loads and empties trash and recyclables into the truck.

 

o   Determines that truck is properly cleaned, serviced, equipped and in proper operating condition before leaving on route.

 

o   Maintains radio contact with the crewleader regarding route changes, work orders, etc.

 

o   Washes the truck on a regular basis.

 

o   Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

 

o   Knowledge of the geographic layout of the City.

 

o   Knowledge of residential recycling collection procedures and routes.

 

o   Knowledge of departmental and safety rules and regulations.

 

o   Knowledge of basic preventive maintenance techniques for a rear‑loading refuse truck, a combination vehicle, or a specialized recycling vehicle.

 

o   Skill in operating a rear‑loading refuse truck, a combination vehicle, or a specialized recycling vehicle.

 

 o   Skill in safe and defensive driving techniques.

 

o    Skill in oral communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Crew Leader - Recycling assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include departmental and safety rules and regulations, and state traffic laws. These guidelines are clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related duties in driving a refuse, combination vehicle, or recycling truck.  Equipment breakdowns and inclement weather conditions contribute to the complexity of the work.

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this assignment is to drive a recycling truck along predetermined routes to collect residential and/or commercial recyclables. The effect of this work is to maintain a clean environment and provide a timely service to the general public.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co‑workers and the general public.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, and give and receive instructions.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is performed with the employee sitting for an extended length of time with intermittent standing, walking, stooping, bending, crouching, and lifting of heavy objects. The employee must possess manual dexterity and the ability to distinguish between shades of color.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in a truck and outdoors. The work exposes the employee to much noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, broken glass, contagious diseases, irritating chemicals, foul odors and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, ear protection, safety shoes, or gloves.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

o    Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

 

o   Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

 

o    Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 

o   Ability to obtain a valid Alabama Class B Commercial Drivers License within six months of employment.
