JOB TITLE:  Police Officer – Patrol Section                                                                                      PD/10

PAY GRADE: 15

 

EFFECTIVE DATE: January 14, 2008

 

JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and the protection of life and property.  The employee in this position may be assigned to Uniformed Patrol, Special Services, Crime Prevention/DARE, or the Court/Warrant Unit.

 

MAJOR DUTIES:

 

          o    Patrols assigned zone to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.

 

          o    Responds to calls relayed by the communications officer, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, public service duties, stranded motorists, and others.

 

          o    Conducts preliminary inquiries, field interviews, and follow-up investigations to include interviewing victims, complainants and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing the crime scene.

 

          o    Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including juveniles.

 

          o    Provides assistance and backup support to other officers as necessary.

 

          o    Provides first aid and CPR to victims as necessary and assists motorists.

 

          o    Provides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, ball games, accidents, and school crossings.

 

          o    Testifies in judicial proceedings.

 

          o    Completes all required reports and forms, including accident and incident reports.

   

          o    Serves warrants.

         

          o    Transports prisoners from jail to court.

 

          o    May oversee equipment inventory, installation, and repair for duty related equipment.

 

          o    May serve as Public Housing Officer, DARE Officer for local schools, Court Bailiff, or Duty Officer.

         

          o    Inspects and maintains patrol car.

 

          o    Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

 

          o    Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, juvenile law, search and seizure laws, City ordinances, and division policies and procedures.

 

          o   Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques and procedures.

 

          o    Knowledge of the geographical layout of the City.

 

          o    Knowledge of first aid and CPR.

 

          o    Knowledge of court system and procedures.

 

          o    Skill in oral and written communication.

 

          o    Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.

 

          o    Skill in restraining persons without causing physical harm.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Lieutenant or Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor reviews work in progress and upon completion for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include state and federal laws, traffic laws, local ordinances, and division policies and procedures.  The guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY:  Work consists of technical tasks related to law enforcement.  The varied nature of calls and the potential for emergencies which require the employee to respond rapidly add to the complexity of the work. 

 

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of the work is to protect life and property and enforce federal, state and local laws.  Successful performance of the work of this position contributes to the safety and well-being of citizens, assists in the apprehension and prosecution of violators, and promotes efficient and effective operation of the department.

 

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the court system, attorneys, judges, medical personnel, members of the general public, and law enforcement officers from other agencies.

 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, justify matters, interview persons, and resolve problems.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Work is typically performed with the employee intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, or crouching.  The employee must be able to restrain persons, lift objects of varying weights, distinguish between shades of color, and possess manual dexterity.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Work is performed indoors, traveling in a vehicle, and outside where the employee may be exposed to cold or inclement weather.  The employee may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases and life-threatening situations.

 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

          o    Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

 

          o    Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

 

          o    Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

 

          o    Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
