Responsibilities

The Environmental Services Department is responsible for providing a wide range of services to the citizen-customers of Auburn. These responsibilities include the collection of garbage, bulky waste (trash) and recycling, along with animal control services, right of way maintenance, and the maintenance of the City's vehicle and equipment fleet. The Environmental Services TEAM is committed to providing these services through the department's six (6) divisions:

Background

The Environmental Services Department’s six divisions are charged with the following: Enforcement of the Animals and Fowl Ordinance and the Solid Waste Ordinance, collection of municipal solid waste including recycling, maintenance of the City’s vehicle and equipment fleet, and maintaining the City’s rights-of-way including bike lanes, multi-use paths, downtown, graffiti abatement, litter collection, mosquito control, street sweeping and vegetation management.

Statistics

  • Animal Control Division
    • Animal Control and the citizens of Auburn submitted 1,736 animals to the Lee County Humane Society during FY 2012 
    • In partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, conducted a Wildlife Awareness Seminar on urban coyote and fox management and control
    • In conjunction with the Information Technology Depart ment, instituted a mapping system for tracking wildlife movement
  • Fleet Services Division
    • There are currently 560 City vehicles or pieces of equipment maintained by Fleet Services
    • A total of 3,184 maintenance and repair work orders were completed in FY 2011
  • Recycling and Solid Waste Divisions
    • A total of 23,961 tons of municipal solid waste collected in FY 2012
    • Household Garbage – 11,383 tons collected
    • Bulky/Yard Waste – 11,181 tons collected
    • General Recycling – 1,100 tons collected
  • Right of Way Maintenance Division
    • 200+ homes sprayed for mosquitoes in FY 2012
    • 3,000+ bags of litter collected in FY 2012
    • Swept 1576 miles of street and City parking facilities
    • Several illegal dumpsite and graffiti clean-ups
    • 21 graffiti clean-ups     
    • Conducted several volunteer clean-ups during FY 2012
  • Responsible Dog Ownership Day, City Schools’ Vehicles Day, and Woofstock (2011/2012)
    • At all three events, Animal Control spoke about proper animal care and control practices
  • Electronics Recycling and Document Shredding, November 2011
    • Documents shredded – 2 tons (3,967 lbs.)
    • Electronics recycled – 7.2 tons (14,377 lbs.)
  • Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day, April 2012
    • 251 participants or 2% of our solid waste customer base
    • 7.5 tons (15,000 lbs.) of HHW collected
    • 2.5 tons (5,000 lbs.) of electronics collected during Trash Amnesty Week, May 2012
    • 236.83 tons (473,660 lbs.) of debris collected

Education and Outreach

  • In partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), AL Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR), Auburn City Schools, Lee County Humane Society and the Parks and Recreation Department, provide animal care and control outreach to citizens.
  • Through the East Alabama Recycling Partnership, promote recycling and waste reduction on a local and county-wide basis.
  • Through Keep Auburn Beautiful and the Great American Clean-up national program held each spring, coordinate with various City departments and volunteers to conduct an annual neighborhood clean-up, various litter reduction events, household haz- ardous waste collection day, and other events to encourage Auburn citizens to take responsibility for their community environment.
