RESOLUTION________
WHEREAS, the City of Auburn and the Auburn community have deeply felt beliefs in the equality of all citizens before the law; and
WHEREAS, recent events at two downtown restaurant-lounges have given concern to the members of the City Council and to the community generally; and
WHEREAS, both establishments have been accused of discriminating against potential customers because of their affiliations with reputable organizations, such as the United
States military and Tuskegee University; and
WHEREAS, both establishments have provided reasons they wish to limit their clientele to certain groups, such as Auburn University students; and
WHEREAS, the City Council understands that these businesses have the right to set their own policies as long as they do not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion,
age, or disability.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Auburn, Alabama in meeting duly assembled:
1. That the City Council urges all businesses to eliminate any barriers to entrance to any group regardless of affiliation or lack of affiliation with the target customer
base; and
2. That all people are welcomed to each establishment that is open for business to the public licensed by the City of Auburn on a first-come, first-served basis; and
3. That the City Council states its intention to review carefully the status of the business or alcoholic beverage license of any business that discriminates against citizens
in any unlawful way.
