General Statement of Duties |
Supervises staff and oversees an assigned Parks and Recreation activity; performs related work as required.
|
Distinguishing Features of the Class |
The principal function of an employee in this class is to supervise Recreation Leaders during an activity sponsored by the Department and to ensure a compliance with all program guidelines and safety requirements. The work is performed under the supervision of the designated Parks and Recreation personnel but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Supervision is exercised over employees in the class of Recreation Leader I and II. An employee in this class performs the duties of other employees in the Parks and Recreation Department as required or as assigned by supervisory personnel. The principal duties of this class are performed in various recreational settings, including sports, cultural arts and crafts activities.

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only) |
· Plans, promotes, develops and coordinates recreational programs for public use and enjoyment;
· Supervises part-time staff involved in a Parks and Recreation activity, including supervising activity participants, enforcing organizational guidelines and ensuring all appropriate safety standards;
· Supervises After-School programs, including planning daily activity/homework schedules, documenting all activity and keeping the After-School Coordinator informed on individual participants and events;
· Oversees a sports, recreation, cultural arts, crafts, exercise, rehabilitative or other related recreation activity to promote a professional presentation of such activities;
· Provides information to Recreation Leaders on the best methods, techniques and procedures for implementing a specific program and promoting a healthy environment of participation based on past experience
· Promotes an environment of participation in which all interested citizens may participate in a scheduled activity;
· Provides guidance to individual recreation participants as to the enhancement of the subject area and the enjoyment of any scheduled activity;
· Performs demonstrations of an assigned activity and participates in games or other events;
· Documents any incident of unsafe behavior or failure to adhere to set polices and informs Parks and Recreation administrative staff as necessary;
· Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
· Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
· Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
· The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department and City employees, members of community organizations and the public;
· Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
· Communicates and coordinates regularly with other department heads and appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities |
· Good knowledge of the assigned recreational activity, including sports, recreation, cultural arts, crafts, exercise, rehabilitative or other related recreation activity as required;
· Good knowledge of safety principles and procedures involved in recreational activities;
· Ability to train, supervise and evaluate the work of others;
· Ability to coordinate a recreational activity involving several participants;
· Ability to communicate well with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
· Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
· Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
· Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
· Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
· Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
· Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
· Integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

Acceptable Experience and Training |
· Some experience in a recreational activity; or
· Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Special Qualifications |
· Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama.

Essential Physical Abilities |
· Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively;
· Sufficient vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to oversee a recreational activity and observe multiple participants at any given time;
· Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to perform reporting and recording requirements;
· Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to participate in recreational activities and supervise assigned programs.
